Variety reports that the most anticipated horror flick of the season, Us, opened to a dynamite $7.4 million Thursday night in the North American market. The horror film has received incredible hype as the follow-up to Jordan Peele’s Oscar nominated debut, Get Out. While the film is reported to not have as prominent of a socio-political message as Get Out, Us has received a steady flow of praise from critics and audiences since its midnight premiere at the South by Southwest film festival.
The horror film stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke as the heads of an African American family whose life plummets into chaos after seeing their malevolent doppelgangers. The family’s serenity is driven to madness as they continue to be terrorized by their demonic counterparts.
Us is Peele’s first picture since signing a major deal with Universal Pictures. The director gone comedian’s sophomore attempt will help determine Peele’s place as a filmmaker. While some fans remain skeptical that the comedian will be able to continue his seamless transition to a directorial powerhouse, Peele has silenced doubters by continuously proving his talent across genres and media.
Us will also release to 48 individual international markets including including France, the United Kingdom, and Germany. You can watch the landmark horror film in theaters everywhere.
