The trailer for producer Rob Reiner’s upcoming documentary, God & Country, has been released. The documentary features religious leaders, scholars, journalists, and historians dealing with the potential threat of a far-right Christian movement and its continued spiral into Christian nationalism. Still, the documentary also wants to compare and contrast extremist Christianity and healthy Christianity.
The God & Country trailer shows a mixture of right-wing marches, the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, and plenty of interviews. One interviewee said, “This is not a movement about Christian values; this is about Christian power.” Another interviewee said, “Christianity at its best is committed to love and truth and justice. If we do this right, what a country we will be.”
Emmy-winner Dan Partland is the documentary’s director, and he has previously handled similar topics with his 2020 film #Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump. The director states, “Christianity is in crisis…To be clear, Christianity is not the problem, and having one’s faith inform one’s political beliefs is not the problem. The problem is the intertwining of Christian identity with a political identity such that it can be hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.”
Distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories will release God & Country to theaters in February.
