DC head James Gunn announced that a new Batman would rule over Gotham City as part of the first phase of the DCU, called Gods and Monsters. Robert Pattison will still play Batman in the Matt Reeves trilogy; he won’t be an official part of the DCU. Gunn said about the transition, “this is the introduction of the DCUs Batman. It is not Robert Pattinson. It is not Ben Affleck.”
This shakeup is part of Gunn’s and co-CEO Peter Safran’s attempt to clean up DC comics as they lose market shares to the more streamlined Marvel. The Brave and the Bold will be the first Batman movie in the new DCU.
The Bold and the Brave is based on Grant Morrison’s run of Batman comics. We will be introduced to Damian Wayne, the son of the Dark Knight, who was separated from his father for the first ten of his life. Damian was trained as an elite killer before reconnecting with his father and taking on the role of Robin. Gunn called Damian his favorite Robin and described the scion as “a little assassin who Batman tries to get in line, and so this is the story of the two of them.”
DC hinted that we might be poised to meet more members of the Wayne family. On the social media post outlining the first chapter of the DCU, Gunn said that The Brave and the Bold is the “beginning of the, sort of, bat family in the DCU.” No release date has been announced yet.
