Universal has announced that their upcoming film Godzilla x Kong: Supernova will feature a significant kaiju villain making a return nearly sixty years after its original appearance. The film will be part of the MonsterVerse. This franchise takes inspiration from Toho’s long-standing Japanese Godzilla series, which introduced Godzilla to the world through the 1954 film. Since then, there have been multiple narratives and interpretations of the creature. Recent entries include Godzilla Minus One (2023), which holds the highest Rotten Tomatoes score, followed by the original 1954 film in second place, and Shin Godzilla ranking third.
Information from the Writers’ Guild of America directory specifies that Supernova will introduce a character previously only ever seen in the original Toho films. Under the production title Zeus, the movie’s screenplay is credited to Dave Callaham and Michael Lloyd Green, with inspiration and source material parallel to Godzilla and Space Godzilla, referring to Toho’s 1994 film Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, where Godzilla battles a cloned version of itself originating in space.
This connection suggests that Godzilla x Kong: Supernova may be influenced by the 1994 film. Overall details are still under wraps; it is unknown how closely it will follow the original story. However, the film’s subtitle, Supernova, hints at similar themes, such as a celestial setting, which could lead to the possible introduction of the SpaceGodzilla character.
The cast includes Jack O’Connell, Kaitlyn Dever, Matthew Modine, Sam Neill, Dan Stevens, Delroy Lindo, and Shane Emmett. The film is scheduled to release on March 26, 2027.
