The new documentary Inmate #1: The Rise of Danny Trejo, which chronicles the life and rise to fame of legendary actor Danny Trejo, just dropped its first trailer. Rather than delay the film’s theatrical release, it’s currently set to premiere on-demand on July 7th in North America.
“Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! It’s a special day for me every year, but this year, even more so because I can share the official trailer for Inmate #1, the documentary telling the story of my life. You’ll be able to watch it around the world this summer!” Trejo said via Twitter.

Produced by Universal Studios, the documentary takes an in-depth look into Trejo’s life and eventual transformation from convict to actor. This includes his troublesome upbringing and willingness to turn his post-prison life around, detailing how constant struggle, hard work and dedication led to his successful acting career. Additionally, the documentary highlights Trejo’s activist work within the Los Angeles community.
Brett Harvey directed the project, which will include in-depth interviews with Trejo’s family and friends and see appearances from those who’ve worked with him in the past. These include such big names as Robert Rodriguez, Michelle Rodriguez, Donal Logue, and Cheech Marin. Hopefully the film will embrace Trejo’s life and his incredible impact on the film community.
