Ubisoft Video Game ‘Beyond Good and Evil’ Getting Movie Adaptation at Netflix

Netflix is adding another major adaptation project to its growing list of original content. Cult classic 2003 video game Beyond Good and Evil, from maker Ubisoft, will be adapted into a feature length film for the streaming service.

The film format will be a hybrid animated, live-action, with director Rob Letterman familiar with the style after directing 2019’s Detective Pikachu and animated films Shark Tale and Monsters vs. Aliens.

The video game, which made a small debut in 2003 and gradually accumulated a cult following, takes place in the 25th century and follows a resistance group that is rising up against the alien invaders taking over their mining planet. In the first game the main character Jade is a journalist and martial arts fighter who collects evidence to prove that those who are supposed to be protecting their planet are actually working with the invaders.

A prequel was announced in 2017, with a trailer debuting at E3, but has not yet been released or have a scheduled release date. The E3 trailer showcases enhanced animation and graphics, much improved from the blocky design of 2003 graphics, and gives a hint of what may be to come from a live-action series.

This project is still in early stages and has no writer attached yet. Producers Jason Altman and Margaret Boykin are already on board alongside Letterman.
