Turning Red won’t have its big-screen movie debut on March 11th. Instead, the film will be moving to Disney Plus on the same day it would’ve been released in theaters. In a statement from The Verge, Kareem Daniel, chairman of Disney’s Media & Entertainment Distribution, provides insight on Disney’s latest decisions to run their newest animated features on Disney Plus: “Given the delayed box office recovery, particularly for family films, flexibility remains at the core of our distribution decisions as we prioritize delivering the unparalleled content of The Walt Disney Company to audiences around the world.”
There’s no plan for a Premier Access video-on-demand setup, as was arranged for Mulan. Instead, Turning Red will be available to all subscribers similar to Pixar’s last two animated features, Soul and Luca. The Disney Animation production Encanto premiered in theaters for Thanksgiving with a 30-day run and arrived just in time for Christmas on Disney Plus.
On What’s on Disney Plus, Daniel also included about Disney’s newest release: “Disney+ subscribers around the world enthusiastically embraced Pixar’s Academy Award-winning Soul and the critically-acclaimed Luca when they premiered exclusively on the service and we look forward to bringing them Pixar’s next incredible feature film Turning Red.”
