Travis Knight has officially signed on to direct Bumblebee, the Transformers spin-off that will focus on the iconic character. This marks the second film directed by Knight, whose first was this year’s Oscar-nominated Kubo and the Two Strings. Deadline was the first to report.
Paramount is keeping the plot details under wraps, but given the amount of time and money they have spend developing the script, it is expected to live up to expectations. The film will be the first movie in the Transformers franchise that is not directed by Michael Bay, whose last directing credit for the series will be this year’s Transformers: The Last Knight, the fifth film of the franchise.
Bumblebee will also mark Knight’s first live-action film. Knight is president/CEO of animation productions company Laika, which has worked on films such as ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, and Coraline. Laika is currenlty working on a ParaNorman tv series. Knight is the son of Nike founder Phil Knight, and still lives in Portland, Oregon, where both Nike and Laika are based.
This spin-off was written by writer Christina Hodson (after a group of writers spent months testing ideas in a writers room). Michael Bay, Stephen Spielberg, and Lorenzo Di Bonaventura will be producing, along with Hasbro’s Brian Golden and Stephen Davis.
Expect to see Bumblebee hit US theaters in June 2018.
