We have finally have our first look at Ben Affleck‘s upcoming Prohibition Era-set crime drama Live by Night. Affleck directs, stars and also wrote the film, an adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s 2012 novel. Lehane’s novels – typically Boston-set crime dramas (like Live by Night) – have previously received cinematic adaptations in the likes of Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-winning Mystic River (2003), Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island (2010) and Gone Baby Gone (2007), Affleck’s directorial debut.
In the film, Affleck portrays Joe Coughlin, a man who becomes embroiled in the world of organized crime in the 1920s, eventually becoming one of the most notorious mobsters. This springs about as a rebellion of sorts against his Boston police captain father. The ensemble cast for the film includes Scott Eastwood (Suicide Squad), Elle Fanning (The Neon Demon), Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Beyond), Sienna Miller (Foxcatcher), Brendan Gleeson (Suffragette), Chris Messina (Cake) and Oscar winner Chris Cooper (Demolition).
Affleck, our current Batman, last directed the Best Picture-winning 2012 film Argo. Live By Night is slated to open on January 13, 2017. Check out the trailer below.
