It has been nearly half a decade since the lovable cartoon character Spongebob SquarePants made his second theatrical debut with Sponge Out of Water. Thankfully everyone’s favorite undersea fry cook returns in his third film with Sponge On the Run. Where the first film was traditionally animated and the second film’s third act show the characters in CG, this time Spongebob and his friends will be featured fully CGI characters for the entire runtime. The Nickelodeon movie’s first official trailer was released today.
The trailer starts out with Spongebob talking about how much he is loving his life and more particularly, the love he has for his snail Gary. It even showcases him meeting Gary as a little kid while at summer camp. However, things take a turn for the worst when Gary goes missing. Now it’s up to Spongebob and his friend Patrick to find his lovable pet snail. During this journey they go to various places including a casino and to the surface again where they come across this magical tumble weed played by none other than Keanu Reeves.
If the trailer’s surreal sense of humor is any indication, this will be another wacky and humorous adventure with the iconic Nickelodeon character. The animation is CGI this time around, but maintains the aesthetic of the 2-D original. While some may say it’s taking elements from earlier Spongebob episodes with the Gary going missing plot done in an episode prior, the off beat style and humor still stays true to the original animated series. Between this and many of the other animated films coming in 2020, Sponge on the Run seems to be a welcome addition to stylized CGI animation that audiences have been seeing more of as of late.
The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run is set for release on May 22nd, 2020.
