A trailer for the anticipated film Maria has finally debuted for audiences. The film, featuring Angelina Jolie’s newest role, comes from director Pablo Larraín.
Maria follows opera singer Maria Callas who has chosen a life of seclusion in the wake of her immense fame. But an offer to perform once again incites her to change her life, even in spite of deteriorating health.
Larraín teams up again with writer Steven Knight, who worked together before on 2021’s Spencer. Joining Jolie in the cast is Alba Rohrwacher, Valeria Golino, Kodi Smit-McPher, and Haluk Bilinger, among others.
Director Larraín has had experience before in bringing historical films to the screen. A previous film of his, Spencer, followed Diana, Princess of Wales, as she comes to grips with a challenging decision about her marriage. Kristen Stewart starred in the film, and was even nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars.
Another film of Larraín’s, Jackie, followed a similar track, as it focused on Jakie Kennedy, former US First Lady and wife of President John F. Kennedy. Similarly, the film resulted in a Best Actress nomination for leading actress Natalie Portman, as well as a nomination for Best Costume Design and Best Original Score.
Hollywood Reporter made note that the trailer does allude to the film showcasing the time that lead right up to the death of Callas in 1977.
Maria comes to Netflix December 11th. Check out the trailer below.
