The trailer for Gillian Robespierre’s new film, Landline, has officially been released.
The film is described as a piece set in Manhattan during the mid-1990’s. Actors include Jenny Slate, who is playing the engaged older sister Dana; Abby Quinn, who is playing the teenage daughter, Ali; John Turturro, who is playing the philandering husband; and Edie Falco, who is playing his wife, and who has come to the realization that the people in her family do not treat her as she deserves.
The current synopsis attached to the trailer involves a daughter (Quinn) realizing that her father (Turturro) is having an affair. While the discovery of this infidelity allows Quinn and Slate’s characters a chance at becoming closer again, it is at great cost, as their new unity hinges on the fact that their parents may separate forever. Ultimately, this negatively impacts their family, which drives the drama and plot of the film. However, it is not the only point of tension in the piece, as Quinn’s character continues to explore her wild, rebellious teenage side, much to her mother’s chagrin. Additionally, Slate’s character proves that she is not entirely different from her father, as she cannot bring herself to fully commit to her fiancé (Jay Duplass) and the domestic life that is currently expected of her. Despite these heavy issues, the trailer shows moments of comedy to supplant the drama, which is sure to infuse the film with a greater tonal complexity.
The film is directed by Robespierre (Obvious Child), who wrote the screenplay in conjunction with Elisabeth Holm. Landline will hit theaters on July 21st of this year.
