In 2015, It Follows became an indie hit after premiering at Cannes the year prior. Since then, audiences have expressed their curiosity about the next project from writer/director David Robert Mitchell. Three years later, it’s finally almost here and now we have our first look courtesy of A24.
Riding on the success of a string of indie hits over the past couple years, A24 is looking to have a triumphant 2018. After releasing trailers for both Hereditary and Eighth Grade earlier this year, they’re continuing the streak by dropping the first trailer for Mitchell’s Under the Silver Lake. The neo-noir, both scripted and helmed by Mitchell, stars Andrew Garfield as a young man besotted with his neighbor in a low-end apartment complex in Los Angeles. However, things get extremely complicated when she suddenly disappears one day, and he becomes dead-set on locating her, not understanding why she wouldn’t tell him where she’s going. This quest leads him to parts unknown in a world he doesn’t fully understand.
A24 is looking to bring the movie to a certain few amount of US theaters beginning June 22. This plan could certainly allow for a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this May, a move that would follow the debut process for Mitchell’s aforementioned hit, It Follows. There’s no reason not to mimic this timeline as it seemed to have paid off the first go around. However, now Mitchell has set a standard that will looked to matched or exceeded. A first look at the new footage draws comparisons to Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice. Have a look for yourselves below.
