Netflix has been steadily making a name for itself with the complex and entertaining original films made available through the streaming service lately. Joining the list is The Land of Steady Habits, starring Ben Mendelsohn. The film is based on the book of the same name by Ted Thompson and it is directed by Nicole Holofcener.
The premise of the story revolves around a man who, after retiring, goes through a kind of mid-life crisis. Feeling as if he is being smothered in his wealthy lifestyle in Connecticut, Anders Hill (Mendelsohn) decides to leave his wife, buy a condo, and wait for his newfound freedom to transform him into a person who has a lust for life. Unfortunately, he stumbles through his blundering adventure to realize that his behaviors are regrettable, his parenting skills are lacking and he misses the life he left behind.
In the trailer, Hill seems to make everyone angry. The acquaintances he encounters don’t want much to do with him. His ex-wife, Helene, portrayed by Edie Falco, tells him that since he was the one who wanted to leave that he should just do it already. Hill’s son, Preston, played by Thomas Mann, looks to be struggling with the fact that although he loves his dad, he is still not a good father. The combination of these things leads to a whole lot of headache for Hill and they make him do things that lead to catastrophe, including a man taking him down at the dinner table. The Land of Steady Habits looks to provide the perfect mix of comedic high moments and dramatic lows.
The Land of Steady Habits will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, but it will be available on Netflix September 14. Until then, check out the trailer for yourself below.
