With Boyhood being a fixture film during the awards season – most recently nabbing the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture in the Drama category – now is as good a time as any for Strand Releasing to debut the U.S. trailer for the (unrelated) French film, Girlhood.
Directed and written by French filmmaker Celine Sciamma (Tomboy), the film doesn’t span the entire adolescence of a young girl’s life (as Linklater’s Boyhood does), but rather follows a young girl living in Paris who forms a bond with a group of girls after dropping out of school, which ultimately leads to her getting involved in drug dealing and other dangerous activities.
The trailer for Girlhood is sparse on dialogue, focusing more on images and moments between the group of girls, all of which is accompanied with a beautiful little piece of music that gives the film a very tender and intimate feel. The French title for the film, Bandes de Filles, actually translates in English to Group of Girls, indicating that despite the change in title, the film may be more about their relationship with each other as they navigate boys, conflict, and the dangers of growing up.
The film premiered at Cannes last year, and later went on to play at the Toronto International Film Festival, getting enthusiastic response and praise in both venues. It will now premiere at Sundance before getting a limited theatrical release slated for January 30th.
