One thing fans tend to be excited for whenever a new Pixar movie releases is a short film accompanying it just after the trailers. However, recent news has surfaced that Toy Story 4 will not be featuring a short in front of their feature presentation. This is the first time in quite a while for this to happen as, since A Bug’s Life premiered in 1998, Each Pixar movie featured a short in the beginning. The closest exception to this in recent memory was the backlash Coco suffered in 2017 for including the 21-minute Olaf’s Frozen Adventure before its screening, which resulted in strong backlash and the short’s removal from theatrical release.
While it’s unfortunate that there will not be a short in front of Toy story 4, thankfully Pixar still has many shorts planned for the future. With their recent Spark Shorts program going on and more shorts set to premier on the streaming service Disney Plus, Pixar will not be stopping their emotionally charged mini-films anytime soon. If anything, Toy Story 4 lacking a short won’t spell the end as the Sparks program has already opened them a huge opportunity for Pixar’s animators to be more ambitious with their upcoming features.
Toy Story 4 is set for release on June 21st, 2019.
