According to The Hollywood Reporter, indie distributor Neon has picked up worldwide rights to the 1986 Tonya Harding documentary Sharp Edges. Last year, Neon released I, Tonya, the darkly comedic feature film biopic of Harding starring Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad), who was Oscar-nominated for the role. I, Tonya was nominated for total of three Oscars, and won Allison Janney (The Girl on the Train) a Best Supporting Actress statue. Harding, a professional ice skater, gained notoriety for her alleged involvement in the attack on her main skating competitor, Nancy Kerrigan.
Sandra Luckow, the filmmaker behind Sharp Edges, made the documentary as part of her senior thesis while at Yale University in 1986. It focuses on a 15-year old Harding competing in her first National Figure Skating Championship and includes interviews with Harding and her mother, LaVona Golden.
Neon plans a one-week theatrical release in Los Angeles and New York for Sharp Edges. The documentary will be released worldwide on Video-On-Demand and for digital download on July 17, and will stream on Hulu starting August 3.
