Sony’s first movie of 2022 and first Tom Holland title of the new year, after Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, Uncharted, over the four-day Presidents Day Weekend. The film is expected to bring in $70+ million on its opening weekend worldwide.
To break it down, that’s another $40 million overseas from 47 markets starting Wednesday in France and Korea, then to Australia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and Norway. Directed by Ruben Fleischer and based on the Sony Playstation video game created by 15-year-old Amy Henning, it has already bagged $22 million from last weekend’s off-shore start in 15 markets, including Russia, the U.K., and Spain, where it ranked No.1. The film is unusually huge in Ukraine despite the looming threats of a Russian invasion.
Holland plays Nathan Drake, a street-smart kid recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan, played by Mark Wahlberg. Together they set out to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan and lost 500 years ago by the House of Moncada.
While films based on video games can be tricky, Uncharted is marketed towards a non-gaming audience and is looking for family paly. Sony is smart to position the film this way, setting up a potential franchise starter coming off the Spider-Man halo effect, which just became the third highest-grossing film to date with $761 million.
Booked at 4,200 locations, Sony is predicting $30 million over the four days and $27 million over three. Critics have given Uncharted a current score of 46% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is set to release in U.S. theaters on February 18th.
