Our beloved friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, Tom Holland, and the talented Austin Butler, known for his Oscar-nominated role as Elvis, are set to take the wheel in the upcoming film American Speed. This adrenaline-charged drama has been picked up for production by Amazon MGM Studios. The film will dive into the world of race car driving, telling a true story that combines speed, scandal, and of course, the thrill of competition.
American Speed will be produced by Charles Roven through Atlas Entertainment. Roven is well-known for his work on Oppenheimer and Suicide Squad. RD Whittington and Douglas Banker will join as producers, with Ryan Sanak as executive producer. Dan Wiedenhaupt is writing the script, bringing together a narrative based on the lives of the Whittington brothers—three racers in the 1980s involved in the IMSA scandal. The motorsport collided with drug smuggling, tax evasion, and money laundering.
A director has not yet been announced, and details about the release date remain under wraps.
Holland and Butler are no strangers to intense, character-driven stories. Holland is widely regarded as one of the most popular actors of his generation and has earned awards like the BAFTA Award and three Saturn Awards. Known for his performances in the Spider-Man series and The Crowded Room, Holland will soon star alongside Matt Damon in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming feature, set to debut in 2026, as well as Sony’s Spider-Man 4, coming to theaters the same year. Talk about a busy schedule!
Butler, whose fame has continued to rise after his Oscar-nominated turn in Elvis, has an impressive lineup of upcoming projects. He’ll appear in Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing, Ari Aster’s Eddington, and add to his roles in Dune: Part Two and The Bikeriders. Butler got his start on Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, with roles on shows like Zoey 101, before transitioning to teen dramas such as Switched at Birth and The Carrie Diaries. He has truly evolved into a Hollywood icon!
The story of American Speed captures a pivotal moment in motorsport history, bringing together themes of ambition, danger, and the allure of speed. With Holland and Butler’s acting skills, this drama promises to be a thrilling addition to Amazon MGM’s slate.
