While perhaps best known for playing the villain Loki in the Avengers and Thor films, Tom Hiddleston will show his range in the upcoming biopic of country music legend Hank Williams Sr. The film, titled I Saw the Light after the song by Williams, will feature the British Hiddleston singing American classics such as “Hey Good Lookin'”, “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”.
I Saw the Light will chronicle the musician’s rise to fame as well as his struggles with alcoholism and prescription drug abuse which contributed to his untimely death in 1953 at the age of 29. The film seems to share many thematic similarities with the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, in which Joaquin Pheonix also did all the singing for the role.
Marc Abraham (Flash of Genius) will direct from his own script based on Colin Escott’s Hank Williams biography. Abraham will also co-produce the film with Brett Ratner among others.
As for Hiddleston, don’t be fooled by his widespread fame as Loki, the man has quietly built an impressive resume of non-Avenger films including Midnight in Paris, War Horse and Only Lovers Left Alive. He is currently filming Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak, which is due out in 2015.
