Tom Hanks Set to Star in Robert Zemeckis Live Action ‘Pinocchio’ For Disney +

One of the many announcements at their Investor Day 2020, Disney is in development of live action Pinocchio remake starring Tom Hanks for their streaming platform.  The film is set to be helmed by Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis, while the script is penned by Zemeckis, Simon Farnaby, and Chris Weitz. The film will be a remake of the 1940 Disney classic and based on the 1883 novel by Carlo Collodi.

It can be assumed that Tom Hanks will be playing the woodcarver and father to Pinocchio, Gepetto, which had been rumored earlier this year. Not much else is known about the project, but it will be using advanced CGI to bring the puppet Pinocchio to life.

Zemeckis is no stranger to creating CGI characters as the latter half of his career has been nearly strictly dedicated to advancing CGI technology. Films like Welcome to Marwin, A Christmas Carol, and Beowulf all come to mind. While all those films fall into the uncanny valley, perhaps Zemeckis and Disney, who has been focused on de-aging technology as well as CGI animals in The Lion King, could combine their efforts to make the perfect live action rendition of Pinocchio.

There is no set release or production date, but it can be assumed that it will be streaming on Disney+ at some point in late 2021, early 2022.
