The dark super hero movie we’ve all been waiting for has been confirmed by creator Todd McFarlane. With the recent trend of superhero films, comic book fanatics have awaited for a movie adaptation of one of the darkest comic book anti-hero’s ever published.
Making it’s print debut in 1992, Spawn grabbed the attention of comic book readers and five years later received its first cinematic adaptation. Was it a good movie, well, not really. Although it did bring some well needed attention to the franchise, and two years later received it’s own animated series, which is currently available on HBO GO for anyone interested. But now after almost twenty years a new Spawn movie will hit theaters.
Creator, and script writer Todd McFarlane said in an interview that he is finished with a first draft, so it may be a while before we receive any more news. However the anticipation is killing us. In an interview with Tiffany Smith on AMC’s “Geeking Out,” a late-night pop culture talk show with Kevin Smith and Greg Gunberg, McFarlane said that there will be a second film and one that’s “not gonna be a continuation, not gonna be a sequel…scrub the first movie, it was 20 years ago. It’s gonna be dark, R-rated, scary, bad-ass sort of script that’s tight and it’s not a nice, polite PG-13 [thing] with ray-guns.”
He also commented, ““The world is gonna be real, except for one thing that’s gonna move. “So, when I watch The Exorcist, that movie was real except for the one girl whose head sorta twirled. You’re never gonna see a dude in a rubber suit…this is gonna be my shark, my Jaws shark…If you’ve got evil in your heart, you better watch out, because he will mess you up.”
On the status of the project, McFarlane said, ““I’ve finished the script, and I’m in the process of editing. It’s 183 pages, and [producers] usually like 120. I still think it’s going to end up being about 140, because I’m putting in details for myself.”
