The fourth entry in the Jurassic Park series, Jurassic World, will reach theaters on June 12, 2015. Producer Steven Spielberg, the director of the first two Jurassic Park films, and director Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) are still attached to the project.
Universal is likely hoping that the news of a firm release date will calm audience fears of trouble behind the scenes after the film was delayed from 2014 release. Jurassic World now joins a blockbuster schedule that includes The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Batman Vs. Superman, and Star Wars VII.
It will be interesting to see how Jurassic World and Star Wars VII fare against a pair of highly anticipated superhero movies. By 2015, Star Wars will have been absent from theaters for 10 years (not counting The Clone Wars animated movie or the Episode I 3D re-release). The Jurassic Park franchise has gone even longer without a new feature film. During that time, superhero movies have been a constant presence during the summer blockbuster seasons. The Avengers (2012) made over $1.5 billion at the box office, while Batman and Superman remain two of the most recognizable and popular superheroes of all time. While the 3D rerelease of Jurassic Park made $57 million, Universal must be concerned that its long-awaited sequel to an old franchise may get overshadowed by sequels to more recent franchises.
