The critically acclaimed 2017 romance drama Call Me By Your Name is anticipating a new sequel sometime in the future. The film, which won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, are welcoming back the cast for the sequel, including stars Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer. These news were reported by director Luca Guadagnino in an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
Guadagnino confirmed: “Of course, it was a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Esther Garrel and the other actors. Everyone will be in the new movie.”
In Call Me By Your Name, Chalamet played Elio Perlman, a 17-year-old student residing with his parents in the picturesque rural Italy. He encounters Hammer’s character Oliver, a graduate student working with Elio’s father (Stuhlbarg). Over the course of the summer, the two grow close and develop a romantic relationship. However, at the end of the summer, Oliver moves to the United States and breaks things off with Elio, leaving him to battle with complex feelings and learn tough life lessons about valuable but fleeting moments. Garrel plays Marzia, who is one of Elio’s childhood friends and flings.
The plot of the upcoming sequel has not been confirmed yet. However, the André Aciman novel on which the movie was based on also has a sequel, titled Find Me which features the same characters. The written sequel takes place 10 years after the original story. The sequel centers around Elio, who has become a gifted classical pianist. On a trip to visit Elio from Florence to Rome, Elio’s father encounters a beautiful young woman on the train, which upends his plans and changes his life forever. Elio soon moves to Paris, where he, too, has an affair, while Oliver, now a New England college professor with a family, suddenly finds himself contemplating a return trip across the Atlantic.
In the interview, Guadagnino reported that like most films these days, the sequel has been put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic. Before the outbreak, he had made a trip to the United States to meet a screenwriter for the sequel.
Call Me By Your Name earned four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Chalamet.
