According to Deadline, Tim Story (Ride Along 2) is set to direct a reboot of Shaft for New Line. The 1971 MGM original was a box office success at the time and starred Richard Roundtree as the iconic New York City private eye John Shaft. The original was no less famous for its soundtrack recorded by Isaac Hayes, which won the Grammy for Best Soundtrack and Best Original Score. “Theme from Shaft” also won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1972. There were two additional sequels starring Roundtree. The most recent sequel in 2000 starred Samuel L. Jackson as a New York City police detective, nephew of the 1970s detective.
The new film’s screenplay is penned by Kenya Barris (Black-ish) and Alex Barnow. The plot is being kept under wraps. John Davis, Ira Napoliello and Barris are producing.
Story has directed Ride Along 2 and Kevin Hart: What Now? . He is currently working on Ride Along 3 starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, and Humbug starring Ice Cube in a contemporary re-telling of the Scrooge story. On the small screen, Story directed the pilot White Famous, based on the early career of Jamie Foxx.
