The year of the musical roars on. The week In the Heights is being released in theaters and on HBO Max, Netflix has given us the first teaser trailer for the adaptation of the Jonathan Larson musical tick, tick… Boom!
Lin Manuel-Miranda has directed the film, which will be his feature film debut. Miranda has made the jump to Hollywood superstardom in recent years with films like Moana, Mary Poppins: Returns, and the long-awaited adaption of his own Broadway show In the Heights. Now the Tony winner steps behind the camera.
Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp, Vanessa Hudgens, and Bradley Whitford are all set to star in this musical. The story follows Jon(Garfield), an aspiring composer, navigating New York City, the loves, the aspirations, and, of course, the doubts, right around his 30th birthday.
tick, tick… Boom! was originally performed in 1990 then subsequently, after much time, published in 2001 after Larson’s death in 1996. Since then there have been many productions of the musical. Most importantly, Larson wrote Rent, which is one of the most prolific and well-loved musicals of all time. That play was in previews Off-Broadway when Larson tragically died. However, clearly Larson’s work has survived through the years and has inspired many.
tick, tick… Boom! is set for a fall 2021 release date.
