Lionsgate recently announced the release date of the Mel Gibson-directed film Flight Risk, making it one of three movies that will be released within a four-month window. These films include the action thriller The Killer’s Game and the crime film Den of Thieves: Pantera.
According to Variety, the plane-themed thriller will be released in theaters on October 18. The film is scheduled right after the Dave Bautista film The Killer’s Game on September 13. The final film of the three is a sequel to 2018’s Den of Thieves, titled Den of Thieves: Pantera, set to release on January 10, 2025.
Flight Risk stars Mark Wahlberg as mob hitman who can take over and pilot a plane carrying an informant out of the Alaskan Wilderness, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. The film will also star Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), an Air Marshal in charge of the flight, and Topher Grace (That 70’s Show), as the informant. The last time Wahlberg and Gibson worked on a film together was in 2022 on Father Stu.
The Killer’s Game is based on the book of the same name by Jay R. Bonansinga. Bautista will star as a top assassin who puts a hit on himself after he is diagnosed with a terminal illness. However, when he finds out that his ex-girlfriend, played by Sofia Boutella (Argylle), is being targeted in the hit as well, he must fight off the assassins and save her. Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Scott Adkins (John Wick: Chapter 4), Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and 3), and Ben Kingsley (Schindler’s List) are also set to star in the film.
Finally, Den of Thieves: Pantera is set to have Christian Gudegast return to both write and direct the sequel to the 2018 heist film that pinned an elite Los Angeles Sheriff’s unit against California’s most notorious bank robbery crew. So far, this new film will have Gerard Butler (300) return as Officer Big Nick and O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton) back as robber Donnie Wilson, who evaded escape in the first film and is now in Europe to try and heist the world’s largest diamond exchange.
It seems that Lionsgate is set on making this fall a thriller-filled time, but they will also be up against horror films releasing at the same time. Flight Risk will premiere alongside the horror sequel Smile 2, and The Killer’s Game will open next to Universal’s remake of Speak No Evil. The Den of Thieves sequel doesn’t have competition in its opening, but things could change as it is the farthest-dated film out of the Lionsgate lineup.
Only time will tell how well these films do on the market.
