Fans of the high-grossing Purge series will rejoice as news comes via Deadline of a third installment getting the green light. James DeMonaco will return as writer and possibly director for the as-yet untitled film, which is sure to terrify fans again when the night of lawful crime occurs again.
There are no plot details as of yet, but earlier this year producer Jason Blum revealed that he hoped the third installment would feature the Revolutionaries, the people who began the tradition of the Purge in the first place. With both original Purge films happening in the space of one year, we might assume that the third will take place in the following year, 2024, perhaps featuring the Revolutionaries as they fight against the anti-Purgers to determine which mode of society to follow. Viewers will remember the way both movies explored the deeper political ramifications a system like the Purge would create, namely low poverty and unemployment rates at the expense of the lower levels of society. Despite an overwhelming horror overtone, we cannot deny that The Purge questions everything about American society and how crime and poverty are handled. Past the killing, there is one crucial question: should something like this actually be attempted?
Fans may also be hoping for a return of Dwayne, the character who survived the first Purge film to play a role as a rebel anti-Purger in the second film. From this trajectory, down from upper-middle-class families to the lower-middle-class families featured more prominently, we may get a look into the survival of the lowest class, the rebellious anti-Purgers, waiting for their shot during the Purge to finally rid the system of this heinous rule.
