Spoiler warning for Five Nights At Freddy’s 2

Director Emma Tammi left plenty of room to speculate on where the next installment will take us, leaving fans with quite the cliffhanger. Mike, Abby, and Vanessa’s journey is far from over and in this sequel, the story primarily focused on the original Freddy Fazbear’s pizzeria where The Marionette and animatronics had been left abandoned.

Mike, Abby, and Vanessa’s last stand against Charlotte (The Marionette) saw the original animatronics providing assistance for the group, but ultimately we end on a sour note of mistrust amongst our trio. With Mike pushing Vanessa away because he no longer trusts her, Charlotte possesses her with Vanessa beginning to turn into The Marionette where things are left.  The rest of the film had strongly established how Charlotte needs a host body, previously possessing Lisa and Abby. Mike broke her out of Abby when he played Charlotte’s fathers old music box, leaving her to slip away as Mike and Vanessa tended to Abby before the cavalry arrived.

Charlotte took her broken mental state with Vanessa being at her lowest ebb, all alone to take advantage and snatch onto her childhood friend. We’ll have to wait and see Mike’s reaction to the reality Vanessa finds herself in, but her being alone was something he felt necessary after so many hidden truths. Vanessa hiding Charlotte’s death, the original location where these old secrets were kept, and the truth about her brother caused a rift between them. The Marionette possessing Vanessa is a new twist on the original lore from the games, but the connection with her father is a clear indicator of where the story might continue into the future.

Our first mid-credit scene sees Springtrap’s return, with 3 men uncovering the suit that William Afton died in in the first film. As the men are leaving the room, one of Spring Bonnie’s eyes flickers on and Afton’s spirit returns. Mike was ominously warned about this happening earlier in the film, but he was simply unaware that it would be Afton who is returning stronger than ever. Charlotte’s father Henry also leaves Mike a message in the post-credits, with a recording playing as credits rolled.  He tells Mike that he and Afton used to be partners, creating the animatronics together.  He still has some old parts that could be helpful in Mike’s fight, but his final message is ultimately a warning about The Marionette.

Looking to the future, the security guard Michael being revealed as Vanessa’s brother and William Afton’s son will be pivotal. Michael disappearing after the showdown with the Toy animatronics leaves fans wondering what happened, and what it now means for Michael’s plans. Freddy Fest was where Michael said he wanted to kill half the town using the Toy animatronics.  Now that they are in rough shape, it’s safe to reason that the next thing we may see is a reunion between father and son with William returning in the form of Springtrap.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 will likely be the vessel for a showdown between the Aftons, reunited as one, and Mike, Abby, and Henry. The duo of Mike and Abby will have to free Vanessa from Charlotte’s clutches, with Henry’s message to Mike indicating he’ll be offering his assistance. This adaptation of the 3rd game should also leave plenty of time to explore the history between Henry and William, drawing back to where everything began with the creation of the animatronics and how it all ultimately fell apart. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 laid strong groundwork for a multitude of payoffs for the third entry, so now all fans can do is wait in anticipation to see where director Emma Tammi takes us next.
