‘The YouTube Effect’ Teaser Trailer: Danger in the Digital Age

Alex Winter’s documentary, The YouTube Effect will premiere on June 11 at the Tribeca Film Festival in the Spotlight Documentary section. The film takes the audience on a gripping journey through the cloistered world of YouTube and its parent company, Google.

“It is an inspirational and cautionary tale as it examines how YouTube has made our lives easier and more enriched, while also presenting dangers that make the world a more perilous place.”

According to Deadline, it investigates YouTube’s humble beginnings from the attic of a pizzeria to exploding into a multi-billion dollar company, out-grossing traditional media, becoming the biggest media company in history, and sparking a cultural revolution, while creating mass controversy.

YouTube earned 8.6b as the fourth quarter closed, up 25% as traditional media struggles with low ratings. It seems the diversity of content is what makes YouTube so strong, yet in a constant struggle with itself. The platform has become the center of many controversies including but not limited to accusations of radicalization, unwarranted surveillance, censorship, algorithmic capitalism, and misinformation.

It is a platform that can be populated by the most wholesome or brilliant content. But it is also filled with trolls, conspiracy theorists, and other vile content creators.

“I’m honored and grateful to be premiering a film at Tribeca for the first time,” said Winter (Bill & Ted Face the Music, Showbiz Kids, The Panama Papers, Zappa). “The festival is revered for its sophistication and cultural savvy, making it the perfect home for a documentary on the global impact of tech titans YouTube and Google.”

Here is the docu-thriller’s teaser trailer, premiering on June 11.
