20th Century Fox has released the full trailer for the highly- anticipated superhero sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse. The trailer confirms more about the plot which sees the world’s very first mutant, Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), threatening to destroy the world in order to rebuild it with him holding god-like status.
The film marks the third time we’ve seen the young X-Men since 2011’s X-Men: First Class which introduced James McAvoy (Victor Frankenstein) as Professor X, Michael Fassbender (Macbeth) as Magneto, Rose Byrne (Neighbors) as Moira MacTaggert, Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2) as Mystique and Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) as Beast, to the franchise. Apocalypse will bring in a new batch of mutants that includes Sophie Turner (TV’s Game of Thrones) as Jean Grey, Olivia Munn (Mortdecai) as Psylocke, Tye Sheridan (Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse) as Cyclops, Kodi Smit-McPhee (Slow West) as Nightcrawler, Alexandra Shipp (Straight Outta Compton) as Storm and newcomer Lana Condor as Jubilee. Lawrence and Hoult have gone on record saying this will be their last entry with the franchise, so it makes sense that they have expanded the franchise’s cast.
The first Apocalypse footage showed earlier this year at Comic-Con and briefly leaked online. Similar to that footage, this trailer is focused on Jean Grey who has visions of Apocalypse’s coming. As one of the new cast additions, it’s likely that she will become one of the new faces of the franchise. It’s also likely the series will eventually retell Grey’s transformation into Phoenix that was told in X-Men: The Last Stand – a film which infamously wasn’t directed by Bryan Singer (X2: X-Men United).
It’s also worth noting that Apocalypse looks very different from the photos released through Entertainment Weekly earlier this year. Fans took issue with the character’s very purple look in the photos. In the trailer, he’s much more grey, befitting of the character’s dark persona.
X-Men: Apocalypse releases May 27, 2016. You can watch the trailer below.
