The Writer’s Guild has officially begun a strike authorization vote that can protect writers’ rights against studios. Although this vote does not indicate that a strike will happen, the ‘yes’ voice can represent the number of people who could go on strike if needed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the voting polls will open April 11th at 8:00 A.M. and close April 17th at noon.
The Writers Guild of America West released an official statement on Twitter claiming that “The studios need to respond to the crisis writers face. WGA members must demonstrate our willingness to fight for the contract writers need and deserve by supporting a strike authorization vote… Over the past decade, the companies embraced business practices that slashed our compensation and undermined our working conditions. We are asking to restore writer pay & conditions to reflect our value to this industry. The survival of our profession is at stake.”
Those who have already voted ‘yes’ and have shown their public support include Daniel Kwan – the co-director of Everything Everywhere All at Once; Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz – Gordita Chronicles showrunner; Aaron Ginsburg – New Amsterdam executive producer, and Dan Hernandez – Koala Man creator.
