According to Deadline, Lashana Lynch from Captain Marvel has joined the cast of TriStar Pictures’ The Woman King, which stars Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis and International Emmy nominee Thuso Mbedu.
Gina Prince-Bythewood, director of The Old Guard, is leading the production of the upcoming film. The Woman King is a historical epic based on true events in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The film follows two characters named Nanisca and Nawi. Nanisca was the general of the all-female military unit and Nawi is her ambitious recruit. They both fought enemies who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.
The film is based on an original screenplay by Dana Stevens, with the current draft by Stevens and Prince-Bythewood.
Prince-Bythewood says that, “Lashana is next-level dope — not just her incredible chops, but who she projects to the world. She embodies these true-life warriors, and we are so lucky she is coming to play.”
Lynch was featured in the 2019 box office hit Captain Marvel with Brie Larson. Next, she’ll be opposite Daniel Craig in No Time to Die and Debbie Tucker Green’s Ear for Eye, the feature film adaptation of her well-received play that debuted at the Royal Court in 2018. Additionally, Lynch is in production on TriStar Pictures and Netflix’s Matilda, which is based on the award-winning hit West End musical.
