Blumhouse Productions has perfected its secret scary sauce for creating horror movies. From Get Out, about a man who visits his girlfriend’s parent’s house for the weekend only to discover they intend to steal his body, to M3GAN, which follows a young girl whose parents gift her a lifelike doll companion that turns into a killer, to Hush, a chilling tale of a deaf woman being stalked by a killer in her home, the studio consistently delivers edge-of-your-seat thrills.
Their latest horror offering, The Woman in the Yard, is a horror-drama thriller directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan, The Shallows), written by Sam Stefanak (F is for Family, The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia), and starring Danielle Deadwyler, Russell Hornsby, Okwui Okpokwasili, Estella Kahiha, and Peyton Jackson.
The story centers on Ramona (Danielle Deadwyler; Till, Parallel), who is grappling with the sudden loss of her husband in a car accident. Now, she must raise their 14-year-old son (Peyton Jackson; Respect, American Refugee) and 6-year-old daughter (Estella Kahiha; The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, Will Trent) alone in a rural farmhouse.
From the trailer, the isolated countryside is the perfect setting for a “monster-in-the-house” horror vibe. A chilling voiceover from a young girl recites a haunting rhyme:
“When the sun is bright, and the wind is still, she comes to you, like a sudden chill.”
The rhyme describes a mysterious woman, dressed in black, who suddenly appears in the yard.
Ramona has no idea who this woman (Okwui Okpokwasili; The Exorcist: Believer, Julie Taymor’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream) is—whether she’s lost or dangerous. Curious but cautious, Ramona approaches her to see what she needs. However, things take a dark turn when Ramona notices blood on the woman’s hands. The stranger ominously declares, “Today is the day,” making it clear she’s there with a sinister purpose.
As the tension escalates, Ramona’s maternal instincts kick in, forcing her to protect herself and her children from the eerie and menacing presence of The Woman in the Yard.
