Grammy-winning and Oscar-nominated recording artist The Weeknd are set to make his feature film debut alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan in an untitled film to be directed by Trey Edward Shults. Along with writing the script with Shults, the Weeknd also serves as a producer and provides a musical score for the film with Daniel Lopatin. Ortega and Shults are also serving as executive producers on the film.
The project has been developed with the Weeknd, Shults, and Shults’ producing partner Reza Fahim. Once a script was written, Ortega and Keoghan didn’t take long to sign on.
Although this is the Weekend’s first feature role, he collaborated with “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson to star in HBO’s “The Idol.” Although the series is not out for streaming yet, it has already received controversy for portraying female characters and Sam Levinson’s “misogynistic and explicit” storylines.
Both Ortega and Keoghan are coming off of highly successful past months, with Ortega receiving critical acclaim for her Netflix show “Wednesday,” and Keoghan recently won a BAFTA for his role in “The Banshees of Inisherin”.
The film is currently in production; no other details have been released. Stay with mxdwn for more details on the film as they are announced.
