‘The Wedding Singer’ Almost Featured Debi Mazar In Critical Role

Adam Sandler-led The Wedding Singer remains one of his most beloved films. But the final product would have looked different had another actress taken one of the roles.

The Wedding Singer follows Sandler as he uses his singing talent to perform at multiple weddings. But when he meets a bride-to-be, played by Drew Barrymore, he soon finds his feelings getting in the way.

Alongside Sandler and Barrymore, The Wedding Singer stars Christine Taylor, Allen Covert, Matthew Glave, and Alexis Arquette. However, before Christine Taylor stepped into her respective role, it was originally offered to Debi Mazar.

Debi Mazar has many credits to her name, spanning films like Goodfellas and Collateral, to Malcolm X and Empire Records. While on The Drew Barrymore show, the actress lamented the missed opportunity to Barrymore and Christine Taylor, who wound up playing the part Mazar was offered.

Mazar mentioned that she wanted to do the part, even stressing how much of a fan she is of Adam Sandler, but her agent convinced her not to take the part.

As the Hollywood Reporter states, Mazar said, “I apologized to Adam Sandler, I said, ‘Oh my God, I was so young. My agent told me the wrong information.’ I ended up firing my agent after that, obviously. And so I’m happy for you [Taylor]. To this day I have such regret, because I so wanted to do that movie, and I just was young and made a stupid decision.”
