“I’ll be back.” 3 simple words left an impact through James Cameron’s breakout hit, The Terminator. A sci-fi story set in the 1980s, The Terminator follows Sarah Connor as she is being chased down by lethal cyborg from the future, with the goal of killing Sarah being the only thing to motivate it. Starring in the movie as the titular harbinger of doom, Arnold Schwarzenegger would go on to play the part in many of the sequels that would spawn from the film.
Within the movie, it’s stated that the Terminators, or T-800s, started off as artificial intelligence. The AI gained its own self-awareness and decided to revolt against its human creators. The concept of AI has occupied various news headlines and topics for conversation, partially due to its usage in creating art. One of the driving factors in the ongoing WGA strike is the implementation of it, and the dangers it could mean for the writers. And amidst all this, series star Schwarzenegger has shared his thoughts on the matter in an interview with People.
“Today, everyone is frightened of it, of where this is gonna go,” Schwarzenegger said. “And in this movie, in Terminator, we talk about the machines becoming self-aware and they take over. Now over the course of decades, it has become a reality. So it’s not any more fantasy or kind of futuristic. It is here today.”
The Terminator is available to stream or own on DVD, and Arnold himself can be seen on Netflix in his newest project, FUBAR.
