

Films starring Nicolas Cage have been known to appear as sleeper hits, Cage even winning an Oscar for best leading actor in Leaving Las Vegas. As his most recent venture, The Surfer, was released last week on friday, and has already earned itself polarizing reviews with critics and audiences. Critics have acclaimed the film while audience receptions are reporting mixed.
The Surfer is reported to hold a fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, earning an 86% from critics. The audience score on the site however, currently holds a 47% reception rate. Cage’s previous performance in the horror film from 2024, Longlegs, also earned a critic score of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and holds a 61% from audiences. Another one of Cage’s notable acting roles in film was Pig which has a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics.
As The Surfer is directed by Lorcan Finnegan and was released in film festivals before coming out into theaters last week. The film concerns itself with Nicolas Cage returning to his hometown to surf in Australia but is met with trouble from the local surfing gang. Cage currently is on top to play football legend, John Madden in the upcoming film Madden to be directed by David O. Russell. He also will be returning as his Spider-Verse in the Spider-Noir spinoff series.
