The Shining IMAX release has been confirmed as the film prepares for another theater run. From the iconic director Stanley Kubrick, the Stephen King adaptation stars Shelley Duvall, Jack Nicholson and Danny Lloyd, following a father slowly losing his mind as he looks after a haunted hotel with his family. IMAX has shared a trailer, announcing that the film will be played in the format for the first time, starting December 12. The trailer features the film’s most memorable and iconic moments, including the unforgettable “Here’s Johnny!”
The film has occasionally played in theaters, but has never been presented in IMAX before, which features either a 1.43:1 or 1.90:1 ratio, depending on the theater and specific IMAX format. Most modern IMAX theaters play films in the 1.90:1 ratio.
The Shining is widely regarded as one of Kubrick’s most beloved movies, so it makes people forget that it was not well-received when it was first released. Critics had issues with the film’s pacing and runtime. The film was not even a box office hit, grossing only $48 million worldwide. The film even earned a Razzie nomination. The film later became a cult classic, becoming beloved by cinema fans everywhere. However, one person was still not satisfied. King has made it clear that he has a distaste for Kubrick’s changes to the source material.
While the film is loved, there is still controversy surrounding it, including Kubrick’s treatment of Duvall, who passed away last year at age 75, which is a major talking point. The actress is said to have been pushed to extreme physical and emotional exhaustion.
It is not clear yet how long the film will play in IMAX for, and news of that will most likely come closer to its release date, along with tickets becoming available for sale.
