‘The Shakedown’ Will Be Amazon’s First South African Original Film

Amazon Prime has been dropping multiple new trailers for their summer films. Among them include the action-comedy Jackpot! and Sam Morril’s new stand-up special, You’ve Changed, both of which released last week.

Now, Prime just announced another new trailer. This time being their first South African original film, The Shakedown. While a first look is not publicly available on YouTube, Variety gained special access to the trailer below:

The Shakedown follows Justin Diamond (Carl Beukes), who seems to have it all. Thanks to his successful medical aid business, he’s rich and can support his close-knit family—including his mistress. But that same mistress threatens to expose Justin’s secret if he doesn’t pay her one million rand. Instead of providing those funds, he seeks the help of his brother to see if the Cape Town underworld could prove beneficial. From there, Justin juggles his seemingly perfect life with the mob bosses and gangs of the underworld.

Directed and co-written by Ari Kruger (Tali’s Diary), and co-penned by Daniel Zimbler (Isithembiso), Collider compared The Shakedown to “Very Bad Things or Rough Night, but with a distinctly South African spin.”

The Shakedown is set to premiere on Amazon Prime on Aug. 8. While this is Prime’s first South African original film, Amazon announced they would be reducing investments in Africa and the Middle East a few months ago.
