Released in 1993, The Sandlot has been an icon of cinema for countless audiences, still staying relevant in the pop culture zeitgeist over three decades later. Even with it competing against several other big-ticket films on Disney+, The Sandlot still manages to outperform them.
A coming of age story merged with a backdrop of baseball, The Sandlot shows viewers the summer experiences of a young group of boys as they try to retrieve a ball signed by baseball legend Babe Ruth from the jowls of a beastly dog.
With it currently residing on Disney+, the film managed to make its way into the top ten chart for ratings the other day. As of July 3rd, it was the fifth most popular title, as FlixPatrol reports.
While beaten out by Ironheart, Snow White, Captain America: Brave New World, and The Parent Trap, The Sandlot’s streaming numbers outnumbered countless other movies in Disney+’s catalogue. Some of the other movies in the top 10 included Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, as well as several of the installments from the Lilo & Stitch series.
Screenrant notes that part of the movie’s allure, especially around this time of year, comes from its reputation of being one of the most popular teen summer movies. Part of the movie even takes place on the Fourth of July, with the group of kids playing a late night baseball game under the fireworks.
