The Dwayne Johnson film Black Adam rocked the box office this weekend, reaping in $67 million domestically. After opening to 7.6M in advance-day previews last Thursday, the DC film continued its strong opening, surpassing the studio’s initial weekend projection of $62 million.
The Warner Bros. movie grossed an additional $73 million budget abroad, for a worldwide total of $150 million. In the coming weeks, Black Adam should have no trouble becoming profitable against its ginormous $195 million budget. All six Warner Bros. pictures released this year finished first in their respective opening weekends.
Black Adam opened to roughly the same as 2018’s Aquaman, another DC film, which earned $67.8M its first weekend and ended its theatrical run grossing $1.1 billion. Black Adam will have some stiff competition, however. Starting its fourth weekend against the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Finishing second, Universal’s Ticket to Paradise garnered $16.3 million since opening last Thursday. This result was also better than expected. With Bros, released last month, being a box office disappointment, the viability of rom-coms as profit makers was in question.
Overseas, the romantic duo of George Clooney and Julia Roberts has already raked in $80 million. A large part of its success was its ability to get older adults in to theaters. Nearly half its sales were to people over 45, a demographic that has largely eluded theaters since the start of the pandemic.
Paramount’s Smile remained strong, finishing third with an overall $8.5 million weekend. Halloween Ends had an 80 percent dip in sales after finishing first last weekend, grossing only $4.3 million in its second week.
Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin opened in four theaters to $184K, averaging a very solid $46K per theater.
Overall, it was a very strong weekend for studios and theaters. It was the first time since July that total box office results topped $100 million in a single weekend.
