The official trailer for Bleecker Street‘s upcoming British-American drama The Roads Not Taken has been released. The film is written and directed by Sally Potter, whose most notable work is 1992’s Orlando, which won Best Film at the Venice Film Festival. Scheduled to be released on March 13, 2020, the movie stars Javier Bardem, who won Best Supporting Actor in the Academy Awards for No Country for Old Men (2007) and Elle Fanning (Maleficient). The cast already seems to be promising with Academy Award nominees Salma Hayek and Laura Linney, alongisde Milena Tscharntke and Branka Katic.
The emotional drama occurs in a single day in the life of Leo (Bardem) whose daughter Molly (Fanning) must grapple with the challenges of her father’s chaotic mind and hallucinatory journey where he floats through two alternate lives he never had. Right from the start, the official trailer establishes a complex but cherished father-daughter relationship as Molly runs to her father to pull him out of a strange state as he lies in bed, unresponsive. Throughout the clip, Leo’s mind wanders between his reality with Molly and the two other lives where he meets Hayek’s character in a deserted country road.
The drama’s title is based on one of famed poet Robert Frost’s work The Road Not Taken, which depicts the struggle of a decision between an individual’s one true destiny and what is expected. It can be said that the drama itself depicts Leo’s journey of the roads “less traveled by” and how his choices affect his loved ones.
