With The Ritual trailer recently dropping on YouTube, horror fans should much anticipate the arrival of mafioso veteran actor Al Pacino starring in his first official horror film. Although Al Pacino made a horror appearance as Satan himself in The Devil’s Advocate, The Ritual is a horror movie supposedly based on true events from an exorcism practiced by the Catholic church.
The trailer depicts Al Pacino as Father Theophilus Riesinger who conducts an exorcism alongside Dan Stevens who will be portraying Father Joseph Steiger. The two priests will be conducting an exorcism on a demonically possessed young woman named Emma who will be portrayed by Abigail Cowen. As the film is based on a true account finding from the Catholic Church, the original woman who the film is based on was named Emma Schmidt. She was reported to be repeatedly exorcised by Catholic priests from 1912 to 1928.
As there have been many exorcism based movies in film history, most notably being The Exorcist, The Ritual has its actors portraying people who have existed, similarly to The Conjuring. Whether or not The Ritual is more fiction than fact, horror and demonology afficianados will be excited to pin point which scenes were true to the actual church exorcism.
The Ritual will be distributed by XYZ films and released on June 6th after originally teasing an Easter release on April 18th. The trailer for The Ritual is available here from YouTube:
