After a more than disappointing theatrical debut in 2020, The Postcard Killings has made it to Netflix’s Top 10 chart from January 22nd to the 28th. The film stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Famke Janssen.
Based on the 2010 book, The Postcard Killers, the story was written by James Patterson and Liza Marklund.
Brought to screens by Danis Tanovic, the movie follows Detective Jacob Kanon attempting to get to the bottom of his daughter’s murder while honeymooning in London. As he digs deeper, he finds that his daughter hasn’t been the first killed, and if he can’t help it, won’t be the last either.
With low scores on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, the film opened to a mesley $181,415 total at the box office. Now it cracked the US Top 10 list on Netflix, sitting with the silver medal for its respective week at number 2.
While the movie’s spike in popularity is left to speculation at this point, Screen Rant speculates that Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Famke Jansson are familiar enough faces to attract audiences. That possibility is also paired with the film’s connection to the crime genre, one that has proven to be successful for Netflix in the past.
Screen Rant also pointed out that while the movie proved to be successful during the week of the 22nd to 28th, there’s no indication if it will continue to see that kind of success.
