The Possibility Of A Sequel To ‘Project Hail Mary’ Forms In Wake Of Film’s Success

While the title contains a more dire usage of the phrase, the release of Project Hail Mary has turned to be anything other but a Hail Mary, becoming a big hit for Amazon MGM, after the studio staked major faith in the sci-fi film. Now that it’s been making waves, both critically and financially, the potential of a sequel has been on the uptick.

Project HaIl Mary, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, finds the world on the verge of ending when the sun begins to die. Recruited and sent out to space to get to the bottom of the situation, science teacher Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, has to use whatever resources at his disposal to fix the sun, getting help from the most unlikely places to do so.

After two weeks in theaters, Project Hail Mary, based on the book from Andy Weir, has been a colossal success. As of this writing, the film managed to make a staggering $223 million worldwide, with a $80.5 million domestic opening, per BoxOfficeMojo. It even managed to snag certified fresh Critic Score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 8.5/10 on IMDb

Hollywood Reporter noted that a sequel to Project Hail Mary is a high possibility in the wake of the hot streak the film has been on. They were able to confirm that inside sources have said, while not at the forefront currently, a sequel is still on the table. One major obstacle standing in the way is no source material from Weir, although sources state that Weir is in charge of where the story could go, assuming there is a sequel.

Project Hail Mary is now playing in theaters.
