Filmmaker Mel Gibson has just given a recent update about his sequel to The Passion of The Christ. The update for the film titled, The Resurrection of The Christ, has officially labled its production date set this coming August, as quoted by CEO Manuela Cacciamani via Variety.
The Resurrection of The Christ’s production is set to be based in Cicnetta’s new Studio 22 facility around the southern Italian town of Matera. Other rumored filming locations include: Ginosa, Gravina Laterza, and Altamura. While on Joe Rogan’s podcast, Mel Gibson was quoted as saying,
“There’s a lot required because its an acid trip. I’ve never read anything like it.”
This quote is sure to get Gibson and Bible scholars excited considering the amount of work and dedication Gibson has been putting into this project for over twenty years. As the consistency with Mel Gibson is apparent in this sequel production, actors Jim Caviezel, Maia Morgenstern, and Francesdo de Vito are all set to return to their roles as Jesus, Mother Mary, and St. Peter respectively.
Back in 2004, The Passion of The Christ was the highest grossing R rated movie of all time grossing over $622 million. To this day, it is the highest grossing religious movie of all time, and the 9th highest grossing R rated movie ever. Current grossing stats place the Biblical epic at #60 as the most money made from a movie’s release.
