Warner Bros. announced today that it will release thriller The Nice Guys starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling on June 17th, 2016. The story is set in 1970s LA and is about a private eye (Gosling) and the muscle he hires (Crowe) to help him on the case of a missing girl, which leads to a larger conspiracy. The date obviously puts the movie, to be directed by Shane Black (Iron Man 3), in the thick of the summer popcorn season, indicating that the studio is bullish on its commercial prospects. Clearly an example of counter-programming, as of now the dark detective thriller will be opening the same weekend as Disney’s Finding Nemo sequel Finding Dory as well as Dreamwork Animation’s How to Train Your Drago 3.
We’ve been following this one since the casting of Gosling and Crowe was first announced, and will continue to bring you updates as they come.
