To call Humphrey Bogart a good actor is an understatement. The Maltese Falcon is often considered the first major film noir film and interestingly is a remake of the film of the same name that was released in 1931. The film featuring Humphrey Bogart is regarded as the “best known version.” The film itself is based off the book of the same title that was published in 1930 and written by Dashiell Hammett. To honor this iconic film status, Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies are bringing this cinematic masterpiece back to a theater near you!
The story involves a San Francisco private detective who becomes entangled in a deep mystery involving the theft of a precious jewel encrusted falcon statuette. Bogart is Sam Spade, the detective who becomes ensnared with three eccentric characters (that’s the best way to describe them) and a beautiful young woman who proves to be a worthy femme fatale. The film was directed by John Huston in his directorial debut and the film would go on to have a lasting legacy moving forward. With a pitch perfect cast, excellent writing by the director himself and suspenseful as ever, The Maltese Falcon rightfully deserves its status as a landmark film. It also was one of the first of twenty-five films to be inducted into the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
The film is back on the big screen for a special two-day showing on January 24 and January 27 respectively. Tickets are available for purchase so be sure to check your local listings to confirm your reservation to witness this icon of a film. Whether its your first or a returning visitor, The Maltese Falcon showcases one of the finest performances of Bogart’s illustrious career.
