Paramount Pictures will distribute The Moon and The Sun – a fantasy film about – King Louis XIV, also known as The Sun King, and a mermaid – in the United States. Pierce Brosnan stars as the French monarch along with William Hurt, Benjamin Walker, Kaya Scodelario, Pablo Schreiber, and Bingbing Fan.
In this work of historical fantasy, The Sun King desires immortality and hopes to achieve his dream by eating the flesh of a mermaid. When he captures one, a lady in his court realizes that the creature is intelligent and should be set free. She struggles to find someone in authority to believe her before the mermaid’s time runs out. The film is based on a novel by Vonda N. McIntyre, directed by Sean McNamara, and written by Laura Harrington.
The Moon and The Sun appears to bring together a few ideas we have seen before in previous, well-known works. First of all, a romanticized interpretation of a historical monarch similar to Henry VIII in The Other Boleyn Girl. The story also has supernatural creatures similar to Twilight, although in this case the mermaid is not anyone’s love interest. Both films proved popular with audiences, we’ll see bringing the two together will result.
